How to Deal with Riding Situations for the Beginning Motorcyclist - Intersections, Curves, Maneuvering & Parking Techniques

Common Riding Situations

- Use the SEE strategy to avoid problems

Intersections
1. Intersections pose the greatest hazard in traffic.

2. Driveways and alleys are also considered to be intersections.

3. Follow these four steps when at an intersection:

    a. Check for traffic behind you.

    b. Check for oncoming traffic.

    c. Check traffic to the left.

    d. Check traffic to the right.

4. Be aware of potential objects or vehicles that could hide you from other drivers.

5. Remain in 1st gear so you can quickly move.

6. Flash your brake lights often to signal traffic from behind.

Traffic Between Intersections

1. Keep a nice safe cushion between you and other vehicles

2. Stay within viewable site.  Avoid blind spots.

3. Go with the speed of traffic

4. Watch out for cars pulling out of parking spots and pedestrians who suddenly jump
    off.

5. Avoid tailgaters.  Move away from them.

6. Do not share a lane with a vehicle

7. Stop or turn to get the tailgater off your back.

Curves

1. Crash studies show that running off the road, usually in a curve, accounts for 40% of
    total motorcycle fatalities.

2. Reduce your speed as needed.

3. Increase your visibility to anticipate any sudden road changes.

4. When turning at a curve, us the Slow/Look/Press/Roll technique.

Limited Space Maneuvers and Turns

1. Use the counterweight technique for slow, tight turns.

2. Move off the center of your seat if necessary.

Parking Techniques

1. When parking parallel to the curb, position the bike at an angle, with the rear wheel
    to the curb.

2. When using your side stands, always turn your handlebars to the left for added
    stability.

3. Carry a solid surface (like a flattened aluminum can) in order to prevent your bike
kick stand from sinking into unstable surfaces.

4. Park your bike in first gear, especially in an incline.  This will prevent your bike from
    moving.
